Activities
Rewrite a Fairy Tale
We all know the story of Cinderella, but what if she wore pirate boots instead of glass slippers? What would Prince Charming think of that?! Read some fairy tales, then write your own version of the story. Brainstorm in a group and get as goofy as you want. Then act out the alternative fairy tale.
Magnet Matinee
This activity takes about four to six hours, so break it down into daily one-hour sessions.
Supplies: Shoe box, construction paper, markers, scissors, tape, glue, paper clips, and magnets
It’s difficult to get larger groups involved in this activity, so you can divide the class into groups to make two or three of these “movies.” Divide those groups further by assigning members to do writing, art, or promotions. One group (within each movie company) will write the movie skit. The art department will design the magnet characters, scenery, and props. The remaining team members will make posters, pamphlets, and commercials, and/or talk with other classes to promote their show.
Session 1: Each movie group comes together to brainstorm for one session in which they will choose the setting and a loose plot. It’s very important that they decide on a setting so that the set designers can begin their job. The promotion department needs to communicate with the writers and art department to put together pamphlets, commercials, posters, etc.
Session 2: Designers work on background, magnet characters, moveable props. Writers develop the characters and focus their plot. The lines can be divided among the group, or just a few actors and actresses can step into the limelight. Promotions continue work from Session 1 and start distributing pamphlets/ hanging posters.
Session 3: The writers and set designers should be finished with the bulk of their work and posters should be up. Now, the group comes together for rehearsal. Students can designate one person as the director to keep them on task. The actors will learn lines, designers will make main characters, writers will edit, and promoters can talk to other classes about their picture.
Session 4: It’s best to do this the last day of the school week. The script, characters, and props are finished and actors know their lines. During the performance, you can have actors move the characters while they are speaking, or one of the writers can do that while the actors read from off-stage.
To congratulate everyone on a job well done, throw a cast party with popcorn and juice. Kids could karaoke or you could have an awards ceremony.
Note: Invite parents to see the show or make an alternative time where they can see their child’s talent.
“All About Me” Puppet and Book
Princess Marigold and Prince Handsomely look like your typical princess and prince, but their personalities are completely opposite. She loves adventure and he loves to sing. What are you like? Make a puppet that looks like you and write an “All About Me” book that explains your personality.
These two activities together take four to six hours total, so break it down into one-hour daily intervals.
“Me” Puppet
Supplies: athletic sock, googly eyes, scissors, and craft glue
Decorate the puppet to look like you. You can glue down felt cutouts, googly eyes, and any other necessary features. Make it look as much like you as possible.
“All About Me” Book
Supplies: construction paper, pens, markers, and crayons
Take five pieces of construction paper and fold them in half to create a ten-page book.
Draw pictures of your favorite things, your emotions, your hobbies, your relationships, your pets.
Now write entries for each picture on scrap paper. When students are done revising, they can carefully fill in the final draft on the pages underneath their drawings.
Read them aloud or place them out for parents to see.
